How a CBD brand replaced banned ads with an organic engine that outsells them

Their ad accounts were suspended, their processor froze funds, and growth had flatlined. Nine months later, organic search and owned channels were driving the majority of revenue — with no reliance on paid.

The challenge

Everything they relied on had been switched off

A national CBD & hemp brand came to us after eighteen months of firefighting. They had a good product, real repeat customers and a store that looked fine — and growth had stopped dead.

  • Ad accounts suspended. Every restart lasted weeks before another ban. Paid had become a treadmill that consumed budget and produced nothing durable.
  • Payments frozen. Their processor held a rolling reserve, squeezing cash flow exactly when they needed to invest in growth.
  • Invisible in search. Just 4 non-brand keywords in the top 3. Competitors and marketplaces owned every term that mattered.
  • Claim risk on every product page. Copy written by a generalist agency put the site one complaint away from a serious problem.

The brief was blunt: build us a growth channel nobody can switch off.

The approach

Fix the foundation, then compound it

We did not start with content. We started by finding out why a store with a decent catalog was invisible — and the answer was not what anyone expected.

Audit & diagnosis

We found the real blockers: a hard age-gate interstitial hiding the entire catalog from Googlebot, 1,900 thin product URLs from unmanaged filters, and product copy carrying claims that put the site at risk.

Fix the foundation

We rebuilt age verification to be crawlable and low-friction, cleaned up crawl budget, fixed Core Web Vitals, and rewrote every product page to be claim-safe — with COAs surfaced as a trust asset, not a footnote.

Build topical authority

We mapped the category's real search demand and shipped E-E-A-T content clusters around the questions buyers actually ask — education, comparisons, ingredient and COA explainers — interlinked to the money pages.

Own the audience

We turned earned traffic into a list: on-site capture, post-purchase opt-ins and lifecycle flows (welcome, abandonment, replenishment, win-back) so revenue no longer depended on any platform.

Optimize & compound

Ongoing CRO on product pages and checkout, plus content expansion into the terms with the highest commercial intent — compounding month over month.

The results

Nine months later, organic outsold everything else

The age-gate fix alone unlocked the catalog for search. From there, authority and conversion compounded — and the owned-channel work meant the growth stopped depending on any platform's goodwill.

What this means for your brand

  • The age gate was costing more traffic than the ad ban ever did — and nobody had noticed.
  • Claim-safe copy outperformed the risky copy it replaced, because trust converts cautious buyers.
  • Owned channels went from 9% to 34% of revenue, making the business resilient to any single platform.
  • Organic compounds: month 9 produced more revenue than months 1–4 combined.

Your ads can be switched off. Your rankings can't.
